Flying to Virgin Gorda:
There are no direct flights to the British Virgin Islands from North America or Europe; however, it's only one small hop on a two engined prop plane to Virgin Gorda via a charter plane or scheduled carrier direct to Virgin Gorda (VIJ) or to Tortola’s Beef Island Airport (EIS) (and then on a ferry from the airport/Trellis bay to Virgin Gorda) from many of the islands in the Caribbean.
From the USA, Canada and Europe via San Juan, PR (SJU), St. Thomas USVI (STT), St. Martin (SXM) or Antigua (ANU)
There are several major airports near the British Virgin Islands which act as hubs for onward travel to both Tortola, BVI and Virgin Gorda, BVI. San Juan (SJU) and St. Thomas (STT) are major international airports for North American carriers while St. Martin (SXM) and Antigua (ANU) are major Caribbean destinations for many European carriers. European travelers going to Miami would still have to fly to SJU or STT.
Many charter carriers and US carriers fly directly to St. Thomas, USVI and San Juan PR, including: WestJet, Spirit, American Airlines, Jet Blue, Southwest, Air Canada, United, Lufthansa/Condor and many other regularly scheduled, charter and discount North American airlines. Others have direct flights to St Martin, (SXM). Many European carriers also land at San Juan and British Airlines has direct service to Antigua (ANU) from London UK. In the winter months it is not unusual to catch "charter" flights that are organized around cruise ship departures and arrivals - Arrivals are usually in the early afternoon and turnaround in the late afternoon.
Effective January 14, 2014 Jet Blue and Seaborne established code share flights allowing passengers to check their luggage through to Tortola or Virgin Gorda from San Juan. Seaborne also operates from 14 different islands throughout the Caribbean.
San Juan is a major cruise ship departure harbor making it a very easy destination from most countries. San Juan lies approximately 70 miles to the west of the BVI's while Sint. Maarten/St. Martin is about 70 miles to the east.
Once in San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Martin or Antigua there are a number of smaller scheduled and charter carriers to get you to the BVI's. Seaborne Airlines, InterCaribbean and LIAT fly throughout the Caribbean so if you are on any of the other islands you can get to BVI without going to San Juan. Seaborne, LIAT, InterCaribbean, Cape Air, and Air Sunshine, fly from San Juan into Tortola.
If you are coming from North America we advise flying into Virgin Gorda airport (VIJ) with Air Sunshine or Cape Air from San Juan or alternatively flying with Cape Air, LIAT, Air Sunshine or Seaborne into Tortola (Beef Island airport) and then taking Speedy's or North Sound Express Ferry over to Virgin Gorda and arriving at Spanish Town (also known as "the Valley"). Flights landing in the morning to mid afternoon are able to use daylight flight regulations to land at Virgin Gorda. Flights landing in Tortola may come in during the daylight or night time.
Scheduled Daily Flights to Virgin Gorda: At the moment Air Sunshine and Cape Air are the only scheduled airlines landing at the Virgin Gorda air strip, however the strip is open to charter flights on one of the various charter carriers in the Caribbean - see below.
Charter carrierssuch as Del Air, Fly BVI, Virgin Gorda Air Charters, VI Airlink and Island Birds also make the flight to Virgin Gorda or Tortola from San Juan, St. Thomas or St. Martin during daylight hours (a requirement). For example Fly BVI will fly from St. Martin into Virgin Gorda. Seewww.virgingordaaircharters.com, www.fly-bvi.com, www.delairways.com or www.islandbirds.com for direct links to their websites. Booking twin-engined planes operated by US government certified charter companies is economical if you have a group of five or more people arriving at the same time into San Juan or St. Martin. Virgin Gorda Air Charters' rates are very competitive with Seaborne or Cape Air and you have the added bonus of a plane waiting for you as you arrive in San Juan (even if your aircraft is late). If you tend to a more exciting trip to BVI, Island Helicopters offers helicopter flights direct to Virgin Gorda's Airport - see www.islandhelicopters.com
Several ferry companies operate out of Charlotte Amalie and go to Tortola a few times each day and two days a week route directly to Virgin Gorda. Visitors must take a taxi from the St. Thomas airport to the dock in Charlotte Amalie. Many people prefer this route because they start to relax the minute they're on the ferry. The ferry ride does provide a sea level view of St. Thomas, St. John and many of the other islands in the Virgin Islands chain. If in doubt about ferry services and times please click on the following link for a form that will simplify your ferry choices; as well below the map is a list of all the relevant ferry companies.
